"Facing the Wall" is a 40-minute performance art piece created by Buwen Chenbing and Huang Ziyue. The performance took place in the recently opened Hecha 1972 Creative Park, a unique art and creative space that was once the largest industrial prison in Anhui Province, China. It stands as the country's first art and cultural park transformed from a prison.
The walls of the confined spaces bear numerous traces left by the prisoners who were once incarcerated there. Contrary to the outdated notion perpetuated by the media, influenced by the infamous Stanford prison experiment, that prisons induce mental disorders, the artists challenge this perspective. They emphasize that, until the time comes, everyone remains tethered to such places, and prisoners can only find solace through self-exploration.
For instance, the walls of the isolation cells are marked with intriguing traces:
- "Welcome, my friends. How have you been?"
- "CTM is utterly rotten."
- "This time, for the sake of eating beef, I didn't get to eat it, and I was confined for two more months."
The walls act as forums in a local network, with likes, comments, and messages, where thoughts and freedom are eternally elastic.
In this performance, three individuals embody human sculptures, representing the legacies left on the prison walls. The QR code interface serves as one of their creations. When scanned by the audience, it reveals a closed interactive interface, a self-questioning and self-answering system within the personal local network.

合柴1972创意园区近日开园，它曾是安徽省 面积最大的工业监狱，中国首个用监狱改造的艺术文创园。闭室的墙上有很多曾经被关押在这犯人留下的痕迹，著名的斯坦福监狱实验骗局，至今的媒体都还在渲染监狱使人精神错乱这套陈旧的观点，事实相反，时间未到，谁都离不开这里，犯人们便只能自我排解。

墙就像局域网中的论坛，点赞留言评论，对于思想，自由永远是弹性的。三人充当人体雕塑，作为监狱墙上留下的遗志，二维码界面是我们的一个作品，观众扫 码得出的界面是个封闭交互界面，个人局域网下的自问自答。
